With lands in both the Lowlands and the Highlands, the clan became one of the most distinguished in Scotland and played a prominent role in the nation’s affairs throughout the centuries. Of English origin, the name is first recorded in Scotland in Renfrewshire, in the thirteenth century, and the clan went on to gain two dukedoms
